Maui Photography Session: Lauren & Kenzie’s Session in Wailea

Most people assume that Maui photography sessions are always proposals, engagements, weddings, or family photos. But sometimes, the it’s simply about celebrating a trip, a milestone, or even a friendship.

Lauren and Kenzie came to Maui with a very clear reason for booking photos: celebrating years of being best friends while finally taking a trip to Hawaiʻi together. Just two girls wanting to remember a season of life and the kind of friendship that deserves documentation too.

We met at sunrise at Po‘olenalena Beach in Wailea, one of our favorite South Maui beaches for early morning sessions. They wanted a mix of individual portraits and photos together, something that felt playful, artsy, and true to their personalities.

Their Maui Photography Session at Po‘olenalena

The Wailea-Makena coastline and tends to feel especially peaceful in the early morning. The beach has a mix of soft sand, lava rock, and open ocean views, with enough space to move around without feeling crowded.

For sunrise sessions, one of the biggest perks is the water color.

Lauren and Kenzie met me at 6:00 AM, when South Maui still feels quiet and untouched. The beach was calm, the light soft, and the whole morning carried the kind of energy that makes people forget they woke up early in the first place.

Celebrating Friendship in Hawaiʻi

Friendship photo sessions are still surprisingly underrated. Years of friendship. Travel. Adventure. Showing up for each other through different chapters of life.

They were incredibly outdoorsy, playful, and immediately open to creative ideas, which made the whole session feel easy. Some people need a little warming up in front of the camera. These two arrived ready to laugh, move around, and trust the process.

Kenzie is a travel nurse, and she mentioned her boyfriend is a photographer too, so they both gravitated toward photos that felt fun and artistic. That openness always creates space for better images.

Their session was intentionally split into different parts.

Half of the gallery focused on photos together, documenting their friendship and the energy between them. The rest included individual portraits for each of them, giving space for photos that still felt personal and relaxed.

Lauren and Kenzie brought so much joy into the morning. They were smiley, adventurous, and constantly open to trying ideas, which gave us room to play with movement, different compositions, and a mix of candid and more artistic portraits.

Some photos felt documentary. Others felt editorial. Some were just two best friends standing barefoot in Maui, laughing at nothing in particular.

Those are usually the images people end up loving most.
