Maui Elopement Destinations: Finding Your Dream Wedding Location

Whether you envision a barefoot ceremony on a sandy beach, an intimate gathering amidst lush greenery, or a grand celebration overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Maui offers a variety of enchanting locations to make your wedding dreams a reality. Let’s explore some of the most popular and picturesque wedding locations on the island:

Maui Beach Wedding:

If you are thinking of a peaceful and yet meaningful Maui elopement with a small group, this might be the option for you! There are 70 Maui beaches that allow wedding ceremonies and can make your Hawaii wedding magical and unforgettable.

Pros:

  • Breathtaking scenery: Maui’s beaches offer stunning natural beauty, with pristine sands, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery, creating a picturesque backdrop for your wedding day.
  • Relaxed and romantic atmosphere: Beach weddings exude a casual and laid-back vibe, allowing you to focus on the love and joy of the occasion without the formality of a traditional venue.
  • Unique and memorable experience: Exchanging vows on a Maui beach is a truly unique and unforgettable experience, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
  • Versatility of beach settings: Maui’s beaches offer a variety of settings to suit different preferences, from secluded coves to expansive stretches of sand, allowing you to personalize your wedding experience.
  • Affordability: Beach weddings can be more affordable than traditional venue weddings, as you may not need to rent a large space or extensive décor.

Cons:

  • Guest limit: There is a limit of 25 participants.
  • Permit requirements: You need a State permit for the day, but good news! Your wedding officiant, planner, or photographer will take care of this for you. As professionals, we are required by the State of Hawaii to have a liability insurance and other documents in order to purchase a permit. This permit is included in any of our packages at Vanessa Arias Photography.
  • Crowds and noise: There could be other events happening at the same beach simultaneously. However, your wedding officiant or photographer will let you know, since the system we use to purchase the permit will give us all the details in advance. In my experience as a Maui wedding photographer, beachgoers tend to be very respectful and mindful of your wedding day being sacred. They are usually very sweet and try not to interfere with the ceremony, but keep in mind that it’s still a public space for everyone to enjoy. The photographers at Vanessa Arias Photography do a really good job at positioning you to guarantee a clean backdrop as well as retouching any unwanted object/subject. You deserve the perfect wedding photos!
  • No alcoholic beverages are permitted. But don’t worry! Many of my couples have planned for a beautiful reception right after the beach ceremony.
  • Limited amenities: No structures, furniture, amplified instruments, tents, altars, or any sort of equipment is allowed on the beach. You can, however, have flowers, acoustic musical instruments, leis, bouquets, cameras, non-intrusive hand-carried wedding accessories, a cake stand, and strictly necessary chairs for the support of the elderly or disabled.
  • Wind and sand challenges: Sand can be an issue for guests and attire, and wind can disrupt decorations or make it difficult to hear the ceremony. Talk to your wedding planner about providing a wireless microphone for the officiant/vows.

Maui Church Wedding:

If you are looking for a more traditional wedding but still like the idea of taking some beautiful sunset beach photos, I got you! Many Maui churches are really close to the beach and we can get away with performing a private-traditional ceremony and then taking some couple portraits in the sand.

Some of my favorite island churches are Maui Pineapple Chapel, Trinity Episcopal Church, and Keawala’i Congregational Church.

Pros:

  • Traditional and spiritual setting: Church weddings offer a sense of tradition, spirituality, and reverence, creating a meaningful and sacred atmosphere for your ceremony.
  • Beautiful architecture and ambiance: Maui’s churches often boast stunning architecture, stained-glass windows, and serene interiors, providing a picturesque backdrop for your wedding day.
  • Indoor comfort and protection: Church weddings provide shelter from the elements, ensuring a comfortable and predictable environment for your ceremony, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Established wedding procedures: Churches have established procedures and guidelines for weddings, providing structure and guidance for couples who prefer a more traditional approach.

Cons

  • Limited flexibility in décor and personalization: Church weddings may have restrictions on décor, music, or ceremony elements, limiting your ability to personalize the experience.
  • Potential scheduling constraints: Churches may have limited availability for wedding dates and times, requiring advance planning and coordination.
  • Religious affiliation requirements: Some churches may require couples to be members or adhere to specific religious beliefs, which may not align with everyone’s preferences.
  • Potentially formal atmosphere: Church weddings can be more formal and traditional, which may not suit couples seeking a more casual or relaxed vibe.
  • Cost considerations: Church fees and additional services, such as organists or choir members, can add to the overall wedding expenses. When booking a session with Vanessa Arias Photography, we can recommend some locations, as well as local officiants, florists, makeup artists, and other local vendors to make your big day magical.

Maui Venue Wedding:

If you are planning a big celebration or would like to integrate a lot of customized details to your day, this is a great option for you!

Maui offers a great variety of ecosystems and consequently, a great variety of private venues as well. These are some of my favorites:

Pros & Cons of a private Maui wedding venue:

Pros:

  • Versatility and personalization: Private venues offer a wide range of settings, from oceanfront estates to lush gardens, allowing you to tailor your wedding to your unique style and preferences.
  • Privacy and exclusivity: Private venues provide a sense of seclusion and intimacy, ensuring that your wedding is a truly special and personal event.
  • Flexibility in décor and arrangements: Private venues often allow for more creative freedom in décor, catering, and entertainment, enabling you to create a truly customized wedding experience.
  • Comprehensive amenities and services: Many private venues offer comprehensive amenities, such as catering kitchens, restrooms, and event staff, simplifying the planning process.
  • All-weather protection: Indoor or covered private venues provide shelter from the elements, ensuring a comfortable and predictable environment for your wedding, regardless of weather conditions.

Cons:

  • Cost considerations: Private venues can be more expensive than beach or church weddings, as they often include rental fees, catering costs, and additional services.
  • Limited availability: Popular private venues may have limited availability for wedding dates and times, requiring advance planning and booking.
  • Venue restrictions and guidelines: Some private venues may have restrictions on noise levels, décor, or the number of guests, which could limit your options.
  • Potential lack of character: Some private venues may lack the unique character and charm of a beach or church setting, which could affect the overall ambiance of the wedding.
