Family sessions are never exactly the same. Sometimes it’s a bigger group, different personalities coming together, kids with their own rhythm, and a beach that slowly changes as the sun begins to set. The goal isn’t to control any of it, but to find a way to move within it and let things unfold naturally.

The Lao family came together in Maui as a multi-generational group. Three siblings, one of them with his wife and their child, and the grandparents all sharing the same space for a few days. The kind of photos that are less about the poses and more about celebrating togetherness.

Maui Family Photos That Feel Natural and Unscripted
With larger families, there’s always a question of how the session will flow. How much direction is needed? How do you keep everyone together, and the kids attentive?
Most of the time, the answer is simple: We just let them be.

We start by bringing everyone together for a few posed portraits, just enough to have that photo where everyone is smiling and looking at the camera. And then we let things open up.

Kids don’t stay still, and they’re not supposed to. The session becomes about giving them space to play, to run, to interact with their family and with the environment. Sometimes that means chasing the water, sometimes it’s being picked up and spun around, sometimes it’s just wandering a few steps away and coming back again.

For Dale’s family, that energy shaped everything. Their child moved freely through the sand, laughing, running, falling into moments that didn’t need to be directed. The rest of the family naturally followed that rhythm, walking, talking, staying close without needing to be arranged.
That’s usually when Maui family photos start to feel real.
Golden Hour at Po‘olenalena Beach

Po‘olenalena Beach has a way of softening everything as the day comes to an end.
The light stretches across the sand, the ocean settles, and there’s a window where everything feels a little more open. That evening, the timing aligned in a way that gave us that warm, steady golden light without rushing into it.

Running toward the shoreline, turning back, laughing, being picked up, and doing it all over again. A whole hour shaped around fun and togetherness.
